Apple’s latest AirPods 4 just dropped, and while everyone’s buzzing about the improved audio and sleek design, there’s one little detail that’s flying under the radar—a hidden button. Apple has tucked away a secret capacitive button in the AirPods 4, doing away with the familiar physical setup button that’s been on previous models.
If you’ve used AirPods before, you’re probably familiar with the small button on the back of the charging case used for pairing or resetting. But this time, Apple decided to mix things up. Instead of a visible button, the new setup button is hidden at the front of the case. According to Gear Patrol, pairing the AirPods 4 now requires opening the case and double tapping the front—right where the hidden button is.
This secret button also serves as the reset mechanism for the AirPods 4. If you need to restore factory settings, a quick triple tap or a long press and hold will get the job done. Pretty slick, right? Apple’s giving us some Bond-level tech with this one.
But what’s really interesting is how understated the design has become. The status light on the AirPods 4 charging case is almost invisible unless you’re actively charging or opening the case. There’s no constant LED dot staring at you when it’s idle. Instead, the light only appears when necessary, glowing through the white plastic shell when the case is open or placed on a charger.
Apple also gave us two versions of the AirPods 4 this time around—one with Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and one without. Prices start at a competitive $129, making these a solid option for anyone looking to upgrade their audio experience without breaking the bank.
If you’re eager to snag a pair, you can preorder now, with the official release set for Friday, September 20th. Just imagine—you could be the only one in your circle who knows about that secret button on launch day.
