Owners of Google‘s Pixel phones have encountered an unwelcome surprise after updating to the newest test software. The Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2, released on Monday, has broken the under-display fingerprint scanner for some Pixel 7 and 7 Pro devices.
Upon updating and attempting to unlock their phone using the fingerprint reader, users are met with an error message stating “Can’t use fingerprint sensor.” Understandably, this would cause concern that the sensor itself has failed. However, Google has confirmed this is a software bug and not a hardware defect.
The issue does not appear to affect all Pixel 7 units. Those who have installed the latest beta are reporting mixed results, with the problem only arising on some devices. Google acknowledged the bug on its Issue Tracker forum and offered a workaround for users to regain fingerprint scan functionality.
The process involves running the same calibration tool you would use after replacing the phone’s display. It requires connecting the phone to a computer to initiate. For those without access to a PC, Google says their engineering team is prioritizing a fix to be released shortly.
This is not the first fingerprint scanner mishap spotted during the Android 14 testing period. Previous betas squashed bugs related to the icon displaying incorrectly and the potential crashing of the biometric prompt. A current known issue also disables haptic feedback on the sensor temporarily.
As a reminder, if the fingerprint situation proves overly frustrating, uninstalling the beta before it ends would reset the phone but result in data loss. For Pixel 7 owners reliant on unlocking with their fingerprint, the best course of action is to sit tight for Google’s impending software update.
