Amazon just handed shoppers a tidy calendar reminder that the holiday season is unofficially open: Prime Big Deal Days — the company’s fall, member-only shopping event — is set for Tuesday, October 7 (starts 12:01 am Pacific / 3:01 am Eastern) and runs through Wednesday, October 8. For bargain hunters who treat Prime’s mid-season sale as the first real chance to knock items off their holiday list, the timing is purposeful: it gives shoppers a head start well before Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Two days, lots of product categories

Unlike the unusually long, four-day Prime stretch Amazon ran in July, this fall event is a compact 48-hour sprint — plenty of time for timed lightning deals, rotating “top deal” drops and the usual flood of category discounts across electronics, home, toys, beauty and more. Amazon is pitching this as the kickoff to the holiday shopping season, and it’s available in many of Amazon’s major markets worldwide.

Why Amazon runs a second Prime event in the fall

There are a few practical reasons Amazon runs an October sale. First: timing. The early October window captures shoppers who want to avoid the last-minute crush in November, and it gives Amazon a chance to clear inventory and seed gift purchases. Second: momentum. A well-timed fall Prime Day keeps Amazon front-of-mind as consumers start holiday shopping, and competitors like Best Buy and Walmart routinely match or counter with their own promotions around the same time. Finally: product cycles. New devices announced in September (or later Amazon hardware reveals) can be pushed into October markdowns — more on that below.

The shadow of July: what last Prime Day taught us about prices

If you want a new Kindle or Echo, pay attention to the announcements on Sept. 30: they’ll determine whether you should wait for an October discount or jump at a fresh model.
