Amazon has launched its drone delivery program in Tolleson, Arizona, marking a major step forward for its Prime Air service. The West Valley Phoenix area is the latest to benefit from Amazon’s fast-moving, high-tech approach to delivery, where eligible customers can now receive packages—up to five pounds—within an hour of placing their order. The Tolleson site is significant as it represents the first integration of Amazon’s drones into its broader delivery network, including fulfillment centers and delivery stations that work together to expedite service.

This new operation utilizes Amazon’s MK30 drones, which have been designed with improvements to carry more weight, travel further (twice the distance of previous models), and operate more quietly. These upgrades are expected to help Amazon expand its drone deliveries into more densely populated suburban areas, including places where properties may have smaller backyards. The drones can also handle adverse weather conditions, such as light rain, which previously grounded older models.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Amazon approval to conduct Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) operations, which means the drones can fly out of the operator’s direct line of sight. This approval is a major milestone, as Amazon becomes the first company to operate drones under this new rule from a dedicated facility.

While the Tolleson site kicks off this new delivery method, Amazon’s drone network is already operational in College Station, Texas, and will soon expand further. Amazon’s decision to close its testing zone in Lockeford, California, earlier this year highlights the shifting priorities as it refines its delivery system.

This expansion is seen as a win for local economies too. Both Tolleson and Phoenix may benefit from the job opportunities and innovation associated with hosting Amazon’s cutting-edge drone service.
