Amazon is gearing up to launch a revamped version of its popular voice assistant, Alexa. This overhaul, which has been in the works for over a year, is expected to be available in mid-October and will require a paid subscription.
The new Alexa, codenamed “Remarkable Alexa” or “Project Banyan,” promises to be more conversational and personalized than its predecessor. It will learn to recognize individual voices, ask users questions about their interests, and tailor recommendations accordingly. For instance, if you tell Alexa about your family’s dietary restrictions, it can suggest recipes that cater to those needs.
One of the most notable features of the new Alexa is its ability to provide daily, AI-generated news summaries. This “Smart Briefing” feature will be customized based on your preferences, offering a curated selection of articles. Amazon believes that this feature can create a daily habit and increase user engagement.
In addition to news summaries, the new Alexa will offer a variety of other features, including:
- Enhanced shopping capabilities: Customers can ask Alexa about product details, compare prices, and even receive notifications when items they’re interested in go on sale.
- Recipe assistance: Alexa can help you find recipes based on your preferences and dietary restrictions.
- Children’s mode: A safe and moderated experience designed for young users.
While the new Alexa will be available as a subscription service, Amazon plans to keep the original version, known as “classic Alexa,” free to use. The subscription cost is expected to be around $10 per month, although Amazon is still finalizing the pricing details.
The launch of the new Alexa comes at a time when competition in the AI voice assistant market is heating up. Companies like Google and Microsoft have also been investing heavily in their own AI assistants, and the race to develop the most advanced and useful technology is intensifying.
Amazon’s decision to introduce a subscription-based model for its new Alexa is a significant departure from its previous strategy. However, the company believes that the additional features and benefits offered by the subscription service will justify the cost for many users.
