A bunch of big-name actors, like Kevin Bacon and Kate McKinnon, are super ticked off about how AI companies are using their work without asking. They think it’s totally unfair that these companies are getting rich off their creative juices without sharing the love.
Over 11,500 creatives have signed a statement calling out this BS. They’re saying, “The unlicensed use of creative works for training generative AI is a major, unjust threat to the livelihoods of the people behind those works, and must not be permitted.”
Ed Newton-Rex, the boss of Fairly Trained, a group fighting for fair AI practices, is not messing around. He used to work for Stability AI, but quit because they were all about using copyrighted stuff without permission. He’s like, “These AI companies are all about people, computers, and data, but they want the data for free! That’s just wrong.“
Some big companies, like News Corp and the RIAA, are already suing AI companies for using their stuff without permission. And now, even the RIAA is joining the fight against AI. They’re all about protecting musicians and making sure they get paid for their work.
But it’s not all bad news. Some actors, like Judi Dench and John Cena, have teamed up with AI companies to lend their voices to AI assistants. And while Scarlett Johansson had a big fight with OpenAI, she hasn’t signed this statement.
It’s a crazy time, man. AI is changing everything, and it’s up to us to make sure it’s fair for everyone.
