At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this year, Acer unveiled significant updates to its flagship gaming laptops, the Predator Helios 18 AI and Helios 16 AI, bringing them to the forefront of gaming technology with some impressive new specs and features.
Predator Helios 18 AI
The highlight of the Predator Helios 18 AI is undoubtedly its dual-mode Mini LED display. This innovative screen can switch between a 4K resolution at 120Hz for those lush, detailed gaming experiences, and a 1080p resolution with a 240Hz refresh rate for when you need those high frame rates in competitive play. Although the refresh rate at 4K is a step down from its predecessor’s 250Hz, this compromise allows gamers to have the best of both worlds without needing multiple devices. The display can reach a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, ensuring vivid visuals, and it supports NVIDIA G-Sync, which is crucial for eliminating screen tearing, stutter, and input lag in fast-paced games.

Internally, the Helios 18 AI is equipped with up to an Intel Core Ultra 9 275HX processor, paired with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 mobile graphics card. This combination promises not just raw power for gaming but also supports a plethora of AI-enhanced applications. The RTX 5090, contributing to the “AI” in the laptop’s name, is designed to handle over 150 AI-optimized apps, including large language models and image generation tools, broadening the laptop’s appeal beyond gaming into creative and professional tasks.
Memory and storage have seen substantial upgrades, with the possibility of up to 192GB DDR5 RAM and 6TB of PCIe Gen 5 SSD storage, ensuring that the system can keep up with the demands of next-gen games and applications.
Predator Helios 16 AI
The Predator Helios 16 AI, while sharing some similarities, opts for a 2560 x 1600 OLED display, which boasts a 240Hz refresh rate, offering gamers a different but equally compelling visual experience with superior contrast and color accuracy. This model can be configured similarly to the Helios 18 AI, with up to 64GB of RAM and 4TB of storage, making it a formidable choice for gamers and content creators alike.

Both models introduce Acer’s sixth-generation AeroBlade metal fans, which are claimed to increase airflow by up to 20% compared to plastic fans, crucial for maintaining performance during those intense gaming sessions. However, the shift towards two Thunderbolt 5 ports might be a point of contention for users with multiple peripherals, as it limits the number of direct connections unless supplemented by docks or adapters.
Availability and pricing
The Predator Helios 18 AI is set to hit the US market in May, with a starting price of $2,999.99, reflecting its high-end specs and capabilities. The Helios 16 AI will follow in June, beginning at $2,299.99, offering a slightly more accessible entry point into Acer’s premium gaming laptop lineup.
