For most of its life, Google Maps has been a brilliant, silent partner. You tell it where to go, and it tells you how to get there. It’s a tool, a utility, the undisputed king of getting from A to B. But that entire relationship is about to change.
Google is in the process of fundamentally rewiring its most popular service, infusing it with its powerful Gemini artificial intelligence. The goal isn’t just to give you a better map; it’s to give you a companion.
“We’ve often envisioned navigating with Maps as being your all-knowing copilot,” said Google Maps product director Amanda Moore in a recent briefing. The mission, she explained, is about “giving you exactly the information you need when you need it and taking the stress out of getting from A to B.”
This isn’t just a minor update. It’s a strategic shift to turn Maps from a reactive tool into a proactive, conversational assistant that understands not just where you’re going, but why.
The map you can talk to
The most immediate change is that Maps is getting a voice—or rather, a brain you can talk to. By tapping a new Gemini icon or simply saying “Hey Google” while in navigation, users can now ask open-ended, complex questions.
This is where the “copilot” idea comes to life. Instead of just searching for “gas stations,” you can now ask, “Are there any good taco spots along my route that have a drive-thru and will be open when I pass by?”
Gemini is designed to handle this by “connecting the dots,” as group product manager Vishal Dutta puts it. It digs into Maps’ massive repository of 250 million places, cross-references that with real-time web information, and then scans reviews from the Maps community.
“And then Gemini pulls it all together with its summarization capabilities into one clear, helpful answer you can act on instantly while you’re on the go,” Dutta said.
Once it gives you a recommendation, you can ask a follow-up, like “How’s the parking?” or simply say, “Okay, add a stop at the first one.” The route seamlessly updates. It’s less like using a search engine and more like, in Dutta’s words, having “a friend who’s a local expert in the passenger seat.”
But this copilot’s job doesn’t stop at navigation. Google is breaking down the walls between its apps. While driving, you can ask Gemini to summarize your unread emails, check your Google Calendar for your next appointment, or even add a reminder to your schedule, all without ever leaving the Maps interface.
‘Turn right at the Starbucks’
Perhaps the most human-centric update is how Google is using AI to change the very language of navigation.
Let’s be honest: “In 800 feet, turn right” is functional, but it’s not how people give directions. We use landmarks. We say, “Turn right at the big blue church,” or “It’s just after the McDonald’s.”
Google Maps will now start doing the same.
This seemingly simple feature is an enormous technical lift. It relies on Gemini’s ability to process and understand billions of Street View images, identify recognizable and permanent visual cues—like a specific gas station, a prominent restaurant, or a distinctively colored building—and integrate those landmarks into your audible directions.
It’s a small change in wording that represents a massive leap in cognitive ease for the driver. You spend less time glancing at the screen and more time looking at the road, waiting for the visual cue you were told to expect.
Your own personal traffic scout
The AI’s new powers also extend to when you’re not even using Maps. For many people, the daily commute is a route driven on autopilot. You don’t need directions, but you do need to know about problems.
A new feature, Proactive Traffic Alerts, has Gemini quietly monitoring your routine routes in the background. If a sudden crash, unexpected construction, or major road closure pops up ahead, it will automatically send you an alert before you get stuck in the jam. The notification is designed to give you enough time to reroute and avoid the delay, helping you stay on schedule without having to remember to “check the traffic” every single morning.
And in a final party trick, Google is integrating Lens directly into Maps. If you’re walking around a new city, you can simply point your phone’s camera at a building. Gemini will kick in, identify the landmark or business, and let you ask questions about it in a natural conversation.
There is, of course, a huge asterisk hanging over any AI-powered product: what happens when it’s confidently wrong?
AI “hallucinations”—where the model invents a plausible-sounding but factually incorrect answer—are a funny quirk when you’re asking for a poem, but a genuine debacle when you’re navigating a one-way street. What if Gemini invents a shortcut? Or confidently recommends a restaurant that closed six months ago?
Google insists this won’t be a problem. The key, according to Amanda Moore, is “grounding.”
“We’ve also really worked to ground this in our place information,” she said. “So when you ask for places on your route, it’s using the actual place information in the real world. So there should be no hallucinations on places to stop at or things like that.”
In essence, Google is trying to put a leash on Gemini’s creativity. When it comes to navigation, the AI isn’t allowed to “invent” new facts; it can only access and conversationally summarize Google’s existing, verified, real-world datasets. This fusion of a creative LLM with a rigid, factual database is Google’s big bet on making AI genuinely useful and safe in the real world.
These new features, which Google says will be free for all signed-in users, are gradually rolling out to Android and iOS, with plans to bring them to vehicles with Google built-in. It’s the beginning of the end for the silent, static map, and the dawn of the all-knowing, all-seeing copilot.
