In an era where back‑to‑back virtual meetings feel like an unavoidable reality, OpenAI is offering Mac users a helping hand. Last month, the AI powerhouse quietly introduced a “Record mode” feature for its business‑oriented tiers—Team, Pro, Enterprise, and Education—and as of mid‑July, that capability is now rolling out to every ChatGPT Plus subscriber on macOS.

Remember the days of frantically jotting down key points on sticky notes? Those are fading fast. From startups to multinational corporations, teams are clamoring for tools that can keep pace with rapid‑fire discussions and seamlessly distill hours of dialogue into concise action items. Enter Record mode: OpenAI’s take on an AI meeting assistant, designed to capture, transcribe, and summarize conversations without ever having to switch tabs or manually upload recordings.

Once you’ve updated the ChatGPT app on your Mac, activating Record mode is as simple as a click. Hit the Record button at the bottom of any chat window, and the app begins listening to both your microphone and system audio. When you’re done—whether that’s a five‑minute brainstorm or a 120‑minute strategy session—the audio file is uploaded to OpenAI’s servers for transcription. Within moments, you’ll see structured notes that include:

  • Summaries: A concise overview of the meeting’s main themes.
  • Key points: Bullet‑style highlights for quick reference.
  • Action items: Clearly defined next steps assigned to participants.
  • Timestamps: Direct links back to specific moments in the recording for detailed review.

All of this lands in your chat history, ready to be edited manually or polished further with a follow‑up ChatGPT prompt.

No AI feature is without its caveats. OpenAI is quick to remind users that legal compliance and consent rest squarely on their shoulders. “Please make sure you check local laws and always get the right consents before recording others,” the company warns in its help documentation—advice that echoes across multiple reports.

Regarding data usage, audio recordings themselves are not used to train OpenAI’s models, but transcripts and associated “canvases” may be, if users have toggled on “Improve the model for everyone” in their settings. Business‑focused tiers (Team, Enterprise, Edu) are opted out of model training by default, whereas Plus subscribers must proactively disable the option if they’d rather keep their transcripts off the training table.

Limitations to keep in mind

  • Duration cap: Each session is capped at 120 minutes, after which recording stops automatically.
  • Language support: While the system can recognize up to 50 languages, English remains the most accurate, with occasional hiccups in less common tongues.
  • Platform exclusivity: For now, Record mode lives only on macOS. There’s no word yet on Windows or mobile versions, though OpenAI has hinted at broader device support in future updates.

Compared to services like Otter.ai or Krisp, which often require joining a meeting as a virtual participant or routing audio through third‑party servers, ChatGPT’s approach is refreshingly straightforward. It listens locally on your Mac, so you don’t need to mess with conference‑call integrations or invite a “bot” to every calendar event. That “local” listening model also sidesteps potential corporate firewall issues, making deployment a breeze for remote‑first teams.
