When Samsung rolled out its latest clamshell foldable at its July Unpacked event, it didn’t just flex its flagship chops with the Galaxy Z Flip7—it introduced a budget-friendly sibling, the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE. This “Fan Edition” model aims to democratize foldable tech, lowering the barrier to entry without skimping on the fold‑and‑flip magic that’s made the series so captivating.

Until now, Samsung’s Fan Edition lineup—known for delivering trimmed‑down tweaks of flagship Galaxy phones—hadn’t ventured into the foldable space. The Z Flip7 FE changes all that, offering the distinctive folder‑in‑your‑pocket form factor at a markedly lower price point than its premium counterpart. While it still sits above the most budget‑minded foldable (Motorola’s Razr starts at $699), at $899 it represents a substantial $200 saving compared to the standard Galaxy Z Flip7, which retails for $1,099.

What you give up—and what you gain

Familiar design with a nostalgic twist

The Z Flip7 FE sticks with the older “file‑folder” cover‑screen cutout, measuring some 3.4 inches at 720p. It’s the same slabs‑and‑hinge aesthetic as the Galaxy Z Flip6, right down to its compact 6.7‑inch internal AMOLED display. If you loved how the Flip6 looked and felt, you’ll feel right at home here.

Camera and battery

  • Rear cameras: 50MP wide‑angle, 12MP ultrawide
  • Front camera: 10MP
  • Battery: 4,000mAh

Performance and battery life should land you comfortably through a day of swiping and snapping, with the ProVisual Engine sharpening those fold‑mode selfies taken on the 50MP FlexCam—even without unfolding your phone.

The trade‑offs

Naturally, some specs have been dialed back to hit that $899 sweet spot:

  • RAM: 8 GB instead of 12GB
  • Chipset: Exynos 2400 vs Snapdragon 8 Gen 3
  • Cover screen: 60Hz / 1,600 nits max brightness vs 120Hz / 2,600 nits

If you’re a hardcore multitasker or demand peak brightness for outdoor use, those concessions might sting. But for most day‑to‑day tasks—from messaging to TikToks—the FE’s combo of hardware and software should feel snappy and vibrant enough.

How it stacks up to the Galaxy Z Flip7

The non‑FE Flip7 is in a different league when it comes to display finesse and raw power:

  • Cover display: 4.1 inch, edge‑to‑edge Super AMOLED at 120Hz
  • Internal display: 6.9 inch, 2,520 × 1,080, Dynamic AMOLED 2X at up to 120Hz
  • Battery: 4,300mAh vs FE’s 4,000mAh
  • Thickness folded: 13.7mm—slimmer than last year, even with a larger cell

It also unlocks Samsung DeX, turning your foldable into a makeshift desktop workstation when you connect it to a monitor. If you crave those bleeding‑edge benefits—and don’t mind the premium price—you’ll want to stick with the Flip7. But if your wallet’s more cautious, the FE hits a much sweeter spot.

Colors and availability

  • Pre‑orders: Open now in the US
  • General availability: July 25, 2025
  • Colorways:
    • Flip7: Jet Black, Blue Shadow, Coral Red (+ exclusive Mint on Samsung.com)
    • Flip7 FE: Black, White

You can reserve yours today straight from Samsung.com or through major carriers and retailers. Promotions like Samsung Care+ (with same‑day screen repairs) sweeten the deal if you’re prone to butterfingers.

Should you flip for the FE?

If you’ve been eyeing foldables but balked at the $1,100 starting price, the Z Flip7 FE is the first truly accessible entry point in Samsung’s lineup—and the best foldable discount since the original Flip SE rumors. It isn’t the peak of innovation, but it delivers the core foldable experience—pocketable design, flex‑mode fun, and eye‑catching cameras—at a fraction of flagship cost.

For everyday users who love tech but watch their budget, the Galaxy Z Flip7 FE might just be the foldable sweet spot we’ve been waiting for.
