Imagine your digital workspace is a chaotic pile of notes, files, and conversations, like a desk overflowing with papers after a particularly busy week. Now, enter “Projects,” the latest feature from OpenAI for ChatGPT, which aims to bring some much-needed order to that mess.

What are ChatGPT Projects?

“Projects” is essentially a sophisticated folder system within ChatGPT, designed to help users manage their interactions with the AI more efficiently. Announced on Day 7 of OpenAI’s festive “12 Days of Ship-mas” event, this feature introduces a new way to organize, not just the chats you have with ChatGPT, but also the files and custom instructions related to them.

In a demo video, the functionality was laid bare. You’ll see your projects listed in a sidebar, where you can click to create a new project, name it, assign it a visually distinctive color, and even upload files that are relevant to the project at hand. This means if you’re working on a screenplay or a software project, you can keep all related documents, notes, and conversations in one place. Moreover, you can set specific instructions for how ChatGPT should interact within each project, tailoring the AI’s responses to fit the project’s unique needs.

How does it work in real life?

The practical applications of Projects were demonstrated through everyday scenarios. An OpenAI employee showcased how one might use it for organizing a Secret Santa gift exchange, keeping gift ideas, wish lists, and budget details neatly categorized. Another example involved home maintenance, where all correspondence regarding repairs, quotes, and schedules could be stored and accessed with ease.

Who gets to use it?

Initially, “Projects” is available to ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo.), Pro ($200/mo.), and Teams ($30/mo.) subscribers, offering them a new layer of functionality to their already rich toolset. Free users aren’t left in the cold for long; they’re promised access “as soon as possible,” according to Kevin Weil, OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer. Meanwhile, those on Enterprise and Edu plans will see the feature in early 2025, ensuring that the educational and professional sectors can also leverage this organizational tool.

This rollout is part of a broader spree of updates from OpenAI, coinciding with their “12 Days of Ship-mas” initiative. Earlier highlights included the introduction of Sora, a video generator, and the Canvas view for ChatGPT, which allows for more dynamic text and code editing. The introduction of a $200-per-month ChatGPT Pro subscription also indicates OpenAI’s push towards more premium, feature-rich services.

Why it matters

The introduction of Projects could be a game-changer for how we interact with AI tools, especially in environments where collaboration and project management are key. By allowing users to group chats, documents, and custom settings, it addresses a common pain point: the clutter of digital communication. It’s not just about tidiness; it’s about making AI assistance more context-aware and thus, more effective.

For individuals and teams who rely on ChatGPT for brainstorming, writing, coding, or any complex task, “Projects” could mean less time spent searching for past conversations, clearer project management, and ultimately, a more streamlined workflow.

As we move towards integrating AI more deeply into our daily tasks, tools like Projects in ChatGPT are pivotal. They signify a shift from AI as a novelty to AI as a necessity in our organizational toolkit, promising a future where managing digital interactions is as intuitive as managing physical documents on a desk.

This feature, while straightforward, mirrors the broader trend in tech where AI isn’t just answering questions but helping us organize our lives and work more coherently. Stay tuned as “Projects” rolls out, potentially transforming how we harness the power of AI in our personal and professional lives.
