Ubisoft has announced the closure of XDefiant, its free-to-play team-based shooter, just months after its official release. Despite launching in Spring 2024 and initially boasting impressive numbers—surpassing 10 million players within two weeks and 15 million overall—the game struggled to maintain its momentum. The game will officially shut down its servers on June 3, 2025, and is no longer accepting new players as of December 3, 2024.
Originally touted as a potential hit, XDefiant had a promising start. In its early days, it managed to attract a wide audience with its arena-style combat and diverse factions. However, by late summer 2024, reports indicated a sharp decline in player engagement, with XDefiant struggling to maintain a stable player base and facing low in-game spending. Despite efforts to revamp the game with new content, including Season 1’s updates and anticipated Season 3 additions, the game’s issues were compounded by declining player retention and insufficient monetization.
As part of the closure, Ubisoft will refund players who purchased the Ultimate Founders Pack and those who bought VC or DLC within the last month. These refunds are expected to be processed within eight weeks of the announcement. Furthermore, Ubisoft confirmed that the game’s San Francisco and Osaka production studios will be closed, and employees at the Sydney studio will also be impacted.
While XDefiant had the potential to carve out its niche in the competitive shooter market, the challenges it faced—ranging from player engagement to financial sustainability—proved too great for Ubisoft to overcome, leading to a swift decision to wind down the project.
