Google Chat is getting a new way to keep meetings from turning into forgotten conversations. Google is rolling out meeting recaps that bring summaries, key decisions, assigned action items, and links to notes, recordings, and transcripts directly into the chat space associated with a Google Meet call.
Announced on October 19, 2026, the feature is designed to help teams move from discussing plans to actually getting things done. Instead of searching through Google Drive for meeting notes or scrolling through lengthy transcripts to remember who agreed to do what, participants can find the essential details in Google Chat after a meeting ends.
What Google Chat meeting recaps include
Each recap appears as a card in the associated Google Chat conversation, bringing together four key elements:
- Meeting summary: A high-level overview of the main discussion topics and takeaways.
- Key decisions: Important conclusions and agreements reached during the meeting.
- Action items: Follow-up tasks with designated owners, making it easier to see who is responsible for what.
- Links to meeting materials: Direct access to the full Gemini meeting notes document, recording, and transcript.

The idea is to make Google Chat more useful as a place to continue work after a call, rather than simply another destination for team messages. Someone who missed a meeting or joined late can use the recap to catch up on the main points without having to read the entire transcript or ask colleagues to repeat the discussion.
The linked documents and recordings also remain accessible for anyone who needs more detail than the summary provides. That distinction matters because a short recap can help someone get up to speed quickly, while the full notes and transcript offer a way to revisit the original discussion.
How to get meeting recaps in Google Chat
The feature works automatically when a Google Meet call has “Take notes for me” enabled and an associated meeting chat conversation exists. Once the meeting ends, the recap is posted to that conversation without requiring participants to create a separate summary manually.
There is one important limitation: if the meeting host configures the notes-sharing setting to send notes only to hosts and co-hosts, Google Chat will not post the recap card to the group conversation. The recap therefore depends not just on the note-taking feature being active, but also on the meeting’s sharing configuration.
Google is also keeping these cards quiet. They arrive without bolding the conversation or adding an unread badge to the chat roster, helping teams access meeting information without creating another round of distracting notifications.
Participants can delete a recap card through the conversation’s three-dot menu by selecting More options > Delete. Removing the card clears the summary from the chat thread, but the original notes document remains stored in Google Drive.
Availability and rollout
Google says meeting recaps will be enabled by default for organizations that have Gemini for Google Workspace enabled, subject to existing Gemini and “Take notes for me” administrator policies. End users do not get a separate setting to switch the recap feature on or off.
The rollout began on October 16, 2026, for Rapid Release domains, with visibility expected to expand gradually over up to 15 days. Scheduled Release domains are due to begin receiving the feature on October 27, with the same gradual rollout window.
The feature is available to eligible Google Workspace subscriptions, specifically:
- Business: Business Standard and Business Plus
- Enterprise: Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus
- Other editions: Frontline Plus
For organizations already using Gemini-powered meeting notes, the addition gives those notes a more visible home in everyday team conversations. It also addresses a familiar workplace problem: capturing what happened in a meeting is useful, but making sure everyone knows the decisions and follows through on their assigned tasks is what makes the meeting productive in the first place.
