Google is expanding its health and fitness ecosystem with smarter automatic workout detection, new wellness monitoring tools, and integrations with popular health apps. The updates are designed to make Fitbit devices and the Google Health app more useful for people who want a clearer picture of their health without manually recording every activity.

Announced on October 12, 2026, the changes include expanded activity tracking for Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and select Pixel Watch models, alongside new Health Guardian features that monitor changes in long-term health trends. Google is also expanding partnerships with Flo Health, Abbott, MyFitnessPal, and Function Health to bring more health information into one place.

Fitbit’s automatic workout tracking gets a major upgrade

One of the most significant changes is an upgrade to automatic activity detection. Google says compatible Fitbit trackers and Pixel Watches will be able to recognize more than 100 types of activities, up from the previous 10.

The expanded list includes strength training, swimming, racket sports, and team sports, making automatic tracking useful for a much wider range of workouts. The goal is to capture exercise sessions even when users forget to start tracking manually.

Google is also using more contextual information to improve detection. The system considers workout routines, historical activity data, and manual corrections. With user permission, it can also use location information to help identify activities more accurately.

According to Google’s internal evaluations, the upgraded system delivers nearly twice the detection accuracy and reduces missed workouts by more than half compared with the previous model. These are Google’s reported results from offline testing, rather than a guarantee that every workout will be identified correctly.

There are some practical limits, too. An activity generally needs to last at least 15 minutes by default and involve a sustained elevated heart rate to be logged automatically. Once a qualifying workout is detected, its summary typically reaches the mobile app within 30 minutes.

The upgrade is scheduled to roll out later in October to Fitbit Air, Fitbit Edge, and Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5.

Health Guardian brings new wellness monitoring tools

Google is also introducing Health Guardian, a collection of wellness and safety features designed to identify subtle changes in health patterns over time.

The initial tools include blood pressure trend tracking and insulin resistance trend monitoring. They are scheduled to roll out later in October to Fitbit Air and Fitbit Edge users with a Google Health Premium subscription.

Users will need to configure the relevant trends in the Google Health app and meet monthly wear-time requirements to receive a report at the beginning of each month. The reports are intended to help users spot changes and consider lifestyle adjustments.

Google Health Coach can then help interpret changes in those patterns, adapt fitness plans, and provide personalized wellness guidance. Users can also get additional context to share with their doctors.

There is an important distinction here: these features are intended to support general wellness, not diagnose medical conditions. Google specifically says its insulin resistance trend feature is not a diabetes prescreening tool and should not be used to manage diabetes, glucose levels, or medication.

The subscription requirement is also worth noting. Health Guardian is not simply a free upgrade available to every Fitbit owner, and access depends on having a compatible device and Google Health Premium membership.

Google adds new Fitbit Air accessories

Google is giving the screenless Fitbit Air a more premium look with new Metal Mesh bands designed to work as everyday accessories rather than just fitness-tracking straps.

The bands feature a flexible stainless-steel weave and come in Champagne Gold and Polished Silver. They are available to preorder for $69.99.

Google is also offering a Champagne Gold Metal Mesh band bundled with an Obsidian Fitbit Air for $149.99. That combination is exclusive to Target and the Google Store, according to the announcement.

The accessories are a smaller part of the update, but they reflect Google’s effort to position its fitness wearables as devices people can comfortably wear throughout the day, including outside the gym.

Fitbit’s health data is becoming more connected

Google is also working to bring more information from third-party health and fitness services into its Google Health app.

The company outlined four notable integrations:

  • Flo Health: A partnership planned to begin in early 2027 will allow users to sync menstrual cycle data from Flo into Google Health, supporting insights tailored to cycle phases and different life stages. The companies also plan to advance women’s health research.
  • Abbott Lingo: US users will soon be able to connect the Lingo over-the-counter continuous glucose monitor to Google Health. The integration is intended to bring glucose trends together with information about meals, exercise, and sleep.
  • MyFitnessPal: Users can bring daily meal and nutrition logs into Google Health. MyFitnessPal Premium members can share more detailed, food-specific logs, while non-premium members can continue sharing daily meal logs.
  • Function Health: US users are expected to gain the ability to import clinical laboratory results into Google Health later this fall.

These integrations could make the app more useful because health information is often scattered across separate services. Sleep data might live in one app, food logs in another, and laboratory results somewhere else. Bringing those records together could help users see relationships between daily habits and longer-term wellness trends.

However, the integrations are arriving on different schedules, and some are limited to users in the United States. Google has not announced universal availability for every feature across all markets.

What the Fitbit update means for users

Google’s latest changes go beyond adding a few new workout categories. The company is combining broader activity recognition, ongoing wellness trend reports, personalized coaching, and connections to outside health services into a more integrated experience.

For everyday users, the improved automatic tracking could be the most immediately useful change. Forgetting to start a workout is a common frustration with fitness wearables, and recognizing more activities without manual input should make tracking less dependent on remembering to interact with the device.

Health Guardian represents a different ambition: using wearable data to help users notice patterns over time rather than simply counting steps or recording individual workouts. But those features come with subscription and device restrictions, and they should not be confused with medical monitoring or diagnosis.

The broader strategy is clear. Google wants Fitbit hardware and the Google Health app to work together as part of a wider health platform, with the wearable collecting information and the app helping users make sense of it. How useful that becomes will depend on the accuracy of the tracking, the quality of the insights, and how widely Google makes these features available.

For now, the automatic activity detection upgrade is the clearest near-term improvement for existing users, while the new wellness tools and health integrations offer a preview of Google’s broader plans for connected health tracking.
