Microsoft has officially made Windows 11 version 26H2, also known as the Windows 11 2026 Update, generally available. The annual feature update begins rolling out to eligible PCs running Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2, but unlike a traditional Windows upgrade, 26H2 is designed to install more like a regular monthly update.

Microsoft announced the release on September 29, saying Windows 11 26H2 uses the same underlying servicing foundation as recent versions of the operating system. For compatible devices, the move to the new version can be handled through a small enablement package, which activates components and features that are already present on the PC.

That means Windows 11 26H2 isn’t a completely fresh operating system build in the way some previous annual updates have been. Microsoft has been moving toward a continuous delivery model for Windows, gradually introducing features through monthly updates and then enabling or consolidating them with the annual feature release.

The company previously explained that Windows 11 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share a common servicing branch and underlying codebase. As a result, many of the improvements associated with 26H2 have already appeared on Windows 11 PCs through earlier updates.

Windows 11 26H2 should be a quick update

For eligible PCs, Microsoft says the 26H2 upgrade is delivered through an enablement package. Because much of the required code is already installed, the package primarily switches on the new version rather than downloading and replacing large portions of the operating system.

The result should be a considerably smaller download, a faster installation and a single restart. Microsoft describes the process as being similar to installing a normal monthly Windows update.

That’s particularly useful for users who have kept their PCs up to date. Rather than waiting through a lengthy feature-update installation, compatible systems can transition to Windows 11 26H2 with relatively little disruption.

The update is available for eligible systems running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Microsoft is using a controlled rollout, however, so not every compatible PC will necessarily see the update immediately. The company can also place safeguard holds on systems where it identifies a compatibility problem.

What actually changes with 26H2?

One of the more interesting aspects of Windows 11 26H2 is that the version number makes the update sound bigger than it actually is.

Microsoft’s continuous innovation approach means many Windows improvements arrive independently of the annual feature update. Several features that will be associated with 26H2 have already been introduced through previous monthly updates.

For example, Microsoft has been improving File Explorer, Search, personalization and other parts of Windows throughout 2026. Recent updates have introduced changes including improvements to File Explorer’s preview behavior, better handling of sections on the Home page, enhanced cloud-file thumbnails and other usability refinements.

Microsoft also says that some features previously introduced but disabled by default will become enabled by default with Windows 11 26H2. For commercial devices, that includes experiences such as Windows settings backup, app-specific taskbar actions and certain File Explorer enhancements.

So, for many users, 26H2 is less about suddenly receiving a huge collection of brand-new features and more about moving the operating system onto the latest supported annual release while activating improvements that have been arriving throughout the Windows update cycle.

How to install Windows 11 26H2

If you have a compatible Windows 11 PC and want to check for the update, Microsoft says to open Settings and go to:

Settings > Windows Update

From there, enable “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.” Once the update becomes available for your device, Windows Update will show the option to download and install Windows 11 version 26H2.

The rollout is controlled, so don’t be surprised if 26H2 doesn’t appear immediately even though your PC is eligible. Microsoft is deliberately expanding availability over time while monitoring compatibility and known issues.

For organizations, Windows 11 26H2 is also available through existing management tools, including Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center. Microsoft recommends that businesses and schools begin with targeted deployments to validate applications and critical workflows before expanding the update across their fleets.

Windows 11’s annual update is still important

Although Windows 11 26H2 isn’t a traditional major upgrade, installing it still matters from a support-lifecycle perspective.

Microsoft says installing version 26H2 resets the support lifecycle for supported editions. Home and Pro editions receive 24 months of support, while Enterprise and Education editions receive 36 months.

That makes 26H2 more than just a version-number change. For users and organizations planning their Windows deployments, it establishes the next annual servicing baseline while keeping Microsoft’s newer, less disruptive approach to feature updates.

For consumers, the biggest takeaway is fairly simple: Windows 11 26H2 is here, but you shouldn’t expect the kind of dramatic overnight transformation that came with some older Windows feature updates. Much of the groundwork has already been delivered through Windows Update. The 2026 release largely brings those changes together under the latest annual Windows 11 version, with a lightweight installation process intended to get users there with minimal interruption.
