McLaren new wordmark branding

McLaren is changing its look, but it isn’t throwing away the visual identity that made the brand instantly recognizable. Instead, the British supercar maker is reaching back to its earliest days for a new identity designed to carry the company into what it calls a new era.

The refreshed identity introduces a new McLaren wordmark inspired by the sign that once hung above the family-owned service station in Remuera, Auckland, where Bruce McLaren’s parents, Les and Ruth, ran the business. That garage was closely tied to Bruce McLaren’s early life and his first steps into motorsport.

The new design uses an all-uppercase wordmark in a custom typeface called McLaren Sans. One of its most noticeable details is a horizontal line beneath the letter “C,” a reference to the original McLaren signage in Auckland. It gives the new logo a distinctly different appearance from the mixed-case wordmark the company has used in recent years.

But this isn’t a clean-sheet redesign. McLaren is keeping the Speedmark, the swoosh-like symbol that has been part of the brand since 1997, as well as the Speedy Kiwi that remains an important part of the company’s heritage. The familiar Papaya orange also stays, while the wider brand palette now includes colors such as Ember, Midnight, Anthracite, Colnbrook and Mist.

That heritage connection is particularly important because McLaren is positioning the new identity across both sides of its business. The refreshed branding is intended to create a more unified visual identity for McLaren Automotive and McLaren Racing, bringing its road cars and motorsport activities under a common design language.

And there’s a neat bit of history behind the choice of inspiration. The McLaren family garage wasn’t merely a place where Bruce grew up around cars. It was also where he worked on a 1929 Austin Seven before eventually driving it to his first motorsport victory at Muriwai Beach.

David Woodhouse, McLaren Automotive’s chief creative officer, described the identity as a reflection of the company’s ongoing journey and its focus on innovation, creativity and forward momentum. The company sees the redesign as the physical expression of a new chapter rather than a rejection of its past.

The timing is also significant. McLaren’s rebrand arrives as the company expands beyond the image of a relatively focused supercar manufacturer. McLaren Automotive has confirmed a £500 million investment in its UK manufacturing and engineering operations, while development of the company’s first performance SUV is underway.

The new identity is already beginning to appear on McLaren products. The upcoming McL 6GT has provided an early look at the new typography, while the upcoming W1 is expected to be the final new McLaren model introduced with the previous mixed-case branding.

In that sense, McLaren’s redesign is less about making the brand look completely different and more about connecting where it is going with where it started. The company has changed its visual identity several times throughout its history, but this time the reference point is unusually personal: the garage and signage associated with Bruce McLaren himself.

For a company preparing to enter a broader phase of its history, McLaren clearly wants that connection to matter. The new logo may look modern, but its inspiration comes from a much simpler beginning: a family garage in Auckland, a young Bruce McLaren and a car built with his own hands.
