Instagram wants users to know when the person featured on a profile was created with artificial intelligence.

Instagram is making a small wording change to its AI transparency system that carries a much bigger message: if an Instagram profile revolves around a person who does not actually exist, the platform wants users to know.

The company has renamed its existing “AI creator” label to “AI-generated profile,” a change designed to make it clearer when the person featured on an account has been created or substantially generated with artificial intelligence. Instagram announced the update on August 31 as part of a broader effort to improve transparency around synthetic identities on the platform.

The previous “AI creator” wording could be interpreted in a couple of ways. A user might reasonably assume it described a human creator who simply uses AI tools to produce their content.

The new AI-generated profile wording is considerably more direct. It is intended for accounts where the person featured on the profile is itself AI-generated rather than a real human. Instagram says the change follows feedback from people who were uncomfortable discovering that a profile that appeared to belong to a real person was actually built around an AI-generated character.

That distinction matters as AI influencers and virtual personalities become increasingly common across social platforms. The problem isn’t necessarily that these accounts exist; rather, Instagram wants users to understand what they are looking at before interacting with them.

The new label can appear on the profile and alongside its content when the individual media does not already have an AI-related disclosure. Creators who previously used the “AI creator” label will be able to review the updated designation and remove it if it no longer applies.

The change is more than a cosmetic rename.

Instagram says it will limit the reach of profiles that feature an AI-generated person but fail to use the appropriate label. If Instagram detects an account that should be labeled, the creator can be notified and check Account Status to see whether the profile has become ineligible for recommendations.

That means an undisclosed AI profile could potentially lose exposure to people who do not already follow it. For creators relying on Instagram recommendations, Reels and Explore to reach new audiences, that could be a significant penalty.

Instagram is also giving creators a way to challenge mistakes. If a profile has been incorrectly identified as an AI-generated account, the creator can appeal the restriction through Account Status. If the appeal succeeds, the profile and its content can become eligible for recommendations again.

Importantly, Instagram says accounts that proactively apply the label will not be penalized simply because they feature an AI-generated person. The issue is disclosure, rather than the mere use of an AI-generated identity.

There is an important distinction here for ordinary creators who use AI as part of their workflow.

Instagram’s new profile label is not intended for every account that uses artificial intelligence. Someone might use AI to clean up a photograph, generate a graphic, polish a caption or make other creative adjustments without having an AI-generated person as the subject of their profile. Those uses do not automatically require the AI-generated profile designation.

That is also consistent with Meta‘s broader approach to AI transparency. The company has been developing separate systems for identifying and labeling AI-generated or significantly modified media, using signals such as industry-standard metadata and self-disclosure.

So the new profile label is best understood as an account-level disclosure about who or what the featured person is, rather than a blanket warning that every piece of content on the account was produced with AI.

The change reflects a broader evolution in how Instagram is handling generative AI.

Meta initially focused heavily on labeling individual AI-generated images and other media. But as completely synthetic personalities have become more convincing, the question has shifted from simply asking whether a particular image was made with AI to asking whether the person users are following exists at all.

The “AI-generated profile” label addresses that problem directly.

It also arrives at a time when social platforms are dealing with a growing volume of AI-generated influencer content. Some synthetic personalities are deliberately designed to look indistinguishable from conventional lifestyle creators, making disclosure increasingly important for users who may otherwise assume they are interacting with a real person.

For Instagram, the goal appears to be relatively straightforward: AI-generated personalities can exist on the platform, but users shouldn’t have to play detective to figure out whether the person behind a profile is real.

And by tying disclosure to recommendation eligibility, Instagram is making transparency a platform-growth issue, not merely an optional badge.
