The wait for the final chapter of Square Enix’s Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy finally has an end date.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on PlayStation 5 on April 8, 2027, bringing the long-running remake project that began with Final Fantasy VII Remake and continued with Final Fantasy VII Rebirth to its conclusion. The release date was confirmed during Sony’s September 3 State of Play, where Square Enix also showed off an extended look at the game and revealed new details about its expanded world, combat systems, editions, and pre-order bonuses.

And judging by what Square Enix showed, this isn’t simply going to be another polished continuation of the formula established by the first two games. Revelation looks like the point where the remake trilogy gets to throw almost everything it has at the player.

The biggest change is the scale of the world.

Square Enix says Final Fantasy VII Revelation will feature the largest open world of the trilogy so far, with the Highwind airship finally becoming a major part of exploration. Rather than treating the iconic airship as little more than a story prop, the game is designed around letting players travel across the planet with it.

For fans of the original Final Fantasy VII, that’s a particularly meaningful upgrade. The Highwind was one of the defining moments of the 1997 game because it transformed the way players interacted with the world. Areas that previously felt distant suddenly became part of one connected adventure.

The remake trilogy has taken a very different approach to world design, splitting the original game’s enormous journey across multiple releases. Remake concentrated heavily on Midgar, while Rebirth opened things up considerably with its larger regions and extensive side content. Revelation now appears ready to take that idea even further.

The Highwind isn’t the only way players will get around, either.

Chocobos return, with Piko once again serving as a companion. This time, however, Piko isn’t merely transportation. The chocobo can also participate in combat and will grow stronger alongside the party, gaining additional abilities that can help with both exploration and battles.

That combination could make traveling through the world feel considerably more dynamic than simply moving from one map marker to another. Square Enix is also adding a grappling gun, giving players another way to navigate environments and quickly reach rooftops and elevated areas.

There is a clear attempt here to make traversal itself part of the fun.

That same philosophy extends into combat.

One of the more unusual additions is the FITS system, short for Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear. Rather than locking each character into a single combat identity, FITS lets players equip specialized uniforms that come with their own abilities and movesets.

There are four types: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, and Summoner. Each can significantly change how a character functions during battle. Square Enix’s gameplay demonstration showed Cid using the Knight FIT and Vincent using the Summoner FIT, giving a glimpse at how dramatically these different configurations can affect encounters.

And, because this is Final Fantasy VII, the system isn’t purely about numbers and stats. The outfits actually change the characters’ appearances as well.

It is a small detail, but one that says a lot about the direction Square Enix is taking. The studio isn’t just trying to make the combat deeper; it is looking for ways to make the party feel more customizable while giving players another reason to experiment with different characters and setups.

Character control itself is also being expanded.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation introduces dynamic character switching that lets players swap between party members while exploring the world. Players will also be able to decide which character handles certain quests, with those choices potentially affecting how particular story events and gameplay situations unfold.

That could make the final game feel considerably more personal than a straightforward linear conclusion.

Instead of every player experiencing every side story in exactly the same way, Square Enix is introducing more room for individual party members to influence how parts of the journey play out. The company describes this as personalized, character-focused storytelling, and it could become one of the more interesting aspects of the finale.

Then there is Queen’s Blood.

The card game became one of Rebirth’s most memorable distractions, and it is returning for Revelation. This time, however, Square Enix is giving it a substantial new storyline centered around Red XIII.

There will be new opponents and new challenges, including opponents capable of dramatically changing the flow of a match. In other words, Queen’s Blood isn’t being treated as a minigame that Square Enix simply needed to bring back because fans liked it. The studio appears to be building it out into another proper side adventure.

For anyone who spent an embarrassing amount of time playing Queen’s Blood instead of progressing through Rebirth, that may be both wonderful news and a genuine threat to productivity.

The release itself is also notable because Revelation won’t be a PlayStation-only game.

Alongside PS5, Square Enix has confirmed versions for Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox on PC, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. That represents a broader launch strategy than the earlier entries in the trilogy and means the conclusion will be available to a much wider audience from day one.

For PlayStation players, though, April 8, 2027 is the date that matters.

Pre-orders are already open on the PlayStation Store, and anyone who pre-orders any edition will receive the Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia as a bonus.

Square Enix is also offering multiple premium versions for players who want more than the standard game.

The Premium Edition includes the main game, a Story Expansion Pass, 24-hour early access, the Reclaimant Choker accessory, and consumable items intended to help during the early stages of the adventure. The Story Expansion Pass will eventually provide two story-focused DLC releases, although Square Enix hasn’t revealed their full details yet.

The Premium Plus Edition goes further with a digital art book, a digital mini soundtrack, Polydroid Alexander Summon Materia, the Nymphwing Bracelet armor, and the Risk Taker’s Choker accessory.

That DLC plan is worth keeping an eye on. Square Enix isn’t simply launching the final chapter and walking away from the project. The Story Expansion Pass indicates that the company already has additional narrative material planned beyond the main campaign, although exactly how substantial those stories will be remains to be seen.

For now, though, the main attraction is clearly the conclusion itself.

The remake project has been an unusually ambitious experiment. Rather than recreate the original Final Fantasy VII scene for scene, Square Enix has spent years rebuilding its characters, world and story while deliberately taking the narrative in new directions.

Remake established the new foundation. Rebirth dramatically expanded the scope. Revelation now has the difficult job of making all of those pieces fit together and delivering a satisfying ending.

That’s a much bigger challenge than simply making another good Final Fantasy game.

There are characters whose stories need to reach their intended conclusions, mysteries that have been deliberately stretched across multiple games, and a fanbase that knows the original story well enough to notice every major deviation. Square Enix has spent years encouraging players to question what is really happening in this version of the Final Fantasy VII universe.

Now it has to stick the landing.

The good news is that Revelation doesn’t look like a cautious finale. If anything, Square Enix appears to be going in the opposite direction, building its biggest world yet, giving players more freedom over exploration and party composition, expanding combat customization and allowing character choices to influence parts of the experience.

That makes April 8, 2027 feel less like the arrival of another sequel and more like the closing chapter of one of the most ambitious remake projects in modern gaming.

After Final Fantasy VII Remake and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, there is finally a date on the calendar for the last journey.

Cloud and the rest of the party have one more adventure ahead of them. And this time, the Highwind is coming along for the ride.
