Walmart has found a new way to turn its famously affordable rotisserie chicken into a conversation starter: a limited-edition clutch shaped like the deli staple itself. The retailer’s novelty “Chicken Purse” collection goes on sale September 1 at 8 am ET, priced at $5.97 – exactly the same as a Walmart rotisserie chicken.
The idea is as delightfully strange as it sounds. Rather than selling another logo tote or branded T-shirt, Walmart has created a statement accessory designed to resemble its packaged rotisserie chicken. It is being released for National Chicken Month, and it leans directly into the oversized-clutch trend that is expected to be popular this fall.
Buyers can choose between two versions: Traditional and Lemon Pepper. Both cost $5.97 and are meant to imitate the look of the chicken packaging shoppers recognize from Walmart deli departments. It is an intentionally playful product, but the price point is a key part of the joke: Walmart is treating the purse like an extension of the low-cost prepared-food item that inspired it.
Walmart is also selling smaller accessories to complete the theme. The collection includes Traditional and Lemon Pepper Chicken Purse charms, each priced at $5.97, alongside Great Value Louisiana Hot Sauce and Lemon Pepper Seasoning bag charms that cost $4 apiece.
That may sound like an unusually specific piece of merch, but the company is responding to real customer enthusiasm around its rotisserie chicken. Walmart says roughly one in every 12 of its customers buys at least one rotisserie chicken in a year, while the product drew more than 15,000 social-media mentions over the past year.
Kim Tunick, Walmart’s group director of brand experiences and partnerships, said the company wanted to give the food item “its own moment” after seeing that level of fandom. In other words, this is not a serious attempt to break into luxury accessories. It is brand marketing built for social feeds, gift buyers, and shoppers who enjoy the odd thrill of owning something that should not work as fashion but somehow does.
The purses will be available while supplies last through SparkShop.com, Walmart’s branded-merchandise storefront, as well as in person at the Spark Shop inside the Walmart Welcome Center in Bentonville, Arkansas. Given the low price and the built-in viral appeal, anyone who wants one may need to act quickly once sales open.
For Walmart, the release is a small but smart example of how everyday products can become cultural objects online. Rotisserie chicken is normally the definition of practical grocery shopping: cheap, quick, and useful for dinner. Turning it into a clutch does not change that, of course, but it gives a familiar value product a moment of personality – and gives shoppers an unusually affordable way to carry their devotion to deli food.
