There is a familiar frustration built into the standard over-the-range microwave: it saves valuable kitchen space, but its ventilation system often feels like an afterthought. Samsung’s new Bespoke Over-the-Range Microwave tackles that compromise with DualVent, a redesigned system meant to pull in cooking fumes from both the front and bottom of the appliance rather than relying on a single intake. The model is now available through select US retailers and Samsung.com.
The central idea is refreshingly practical. Most people use the front burners most often, whether they are searing vegetables, boiling pasta, or managing a skillet during a rushed weeknight dinner. Yet conventional microwave vents can struggle to catch smoke and steam before they drift outward into the kitchen. Samsung’s response is a front-facing intake that targets those high-use burners, paired with a bottom intake that handles the rest of the cooktop.
Samsung says the result is a fume-capture rate of up to 82 percent under its test conditions, which it says is comparable with its standalone range hoods. That is an ambitious claim, and it is worth treating it as a manufacturer figure rather than a universal real-world guarantee. Still, the design addresses a very real limitation of the over-the-range category: smoke does not rise in a neat vertical line, especially when it comes from the burner closest to the cook.
DualVent is not merely a new fan setting. It changes the physical layout of the microwave, adding an intake at the front alongside the one underneath. When activated, front vent blades open through the LED-lit control interface; when the fan turns off, they close automatically. Samsung is clearly trying to make a feature that can seem industrial and clunky feel more integrated with a modern kitchen.

That matters because range ventilation is easy to ignore until it fails. A powerful burner, a hot wok, or a pan of bacon can quickly fill a room with lingering odors and airborne grease. In smaller homes, apartments, and open-plan kitchens, that problem becomes especially noticeable because cooking space and living space are often one and the same.
The standard over-the-range microwave remains popular for a reason: it consolidates two appliances into the footprint above a stove. But that convenience has historically required buyers to accept weaker ventilation performance than they might get from a dedicated hood. Samsung’s pitch is that homeowners should not have to sacrifice either counter space or serious exhaust capability.
The new microwave also includes Samsung’s Auto Connectivity feature, which links it with certain compatible Samsung Wi-Fi-enabled cooktops and ranges through SmartThings. With the setup in place, the microwave’s ventilation can coordinate with the cooking appliance, and users can control both through the microwave’s one-touch controls.
There is an important caveat here. Auto Connectivity is not a broad smart-home standard that works with every stove, nor is it useful without the required compatible Samsung equipment, Wi-Fi connection, and SmartThings registration. Samsung also notes that the microwave’s fan can operate automatically for safety when the unit detects high temperature underneath it, overriding the usual connectivity behavior.
That distinction is important as appliance makers increasingly fold “smart” features into everyday hardware. The most useful connected-home functions are often the least flashy: turning a fan on when cooking begins, coordinating controls between two appliances, or reducing the chance that someone forgets to run ventilation while a pan is smoking. Samsung appears to understand that the value here is convenience, not another screen demanding attention.
The microwave’s fingerprint-resistant exterior may sound minor next to the ventilation claims, but it fits the same larger theme. Kitchen appliances are being asked to do more without looking more complicated. The Bespoke branding has long been Samsung’s way of emphasizing design coordination and a more polished appliance aesthetic. Here, the company is applying that approach to an appliance usually bought for utility rather than excitement.
There is a broader shift underway in kitchen upgrades, too. Refrigerators with large screens and AI-driven features get the headlines, while ranges attract attention for induction and air-frying modes. But ventilation is one of the more consequential pieces of the kitchen ecosystem because it affects comfort, odor control, and how livable the room feels after cooking. The problem is simply less glamorous – until a kitchen smells like last night’s dinner the following morning.
Samsung had already been building out its 2026 cooking lineup, including new slide-in ranges and an over-the-range microwave with Air Fry Max, while also expanding connected features across its Bespoke AI appliance range. The DualVent model fits that strategy, but its strongest selling point is not AI. It is the attempt to make a space-saving microwave behave more like a proper ventilation appliance.
The new Bespoke Over-the-Range Microwave makes the most sense for people renovating a compact kitchen, replacing an older over-the-range unit, or trying to improve ventilation without giving up the cabinet space needed for a separate hood. Its promise is straightforward: more capture coverage where cooking happens, without asking users to manually deploy an extra vent panel.
Buyers should still look beyond the headline capture percentage. Installation type matters, particularly whether a kitchen vents air outside or recirculates it through filters. The size and layout of the cooktop, the kinds of meals prepared, and the kitchen’s openness all influence how effective any ventilation system feels in daily use. A household that frequently cooks at high heat may still prefer the capacity and airflow flexibility of a dedicated external-venting range hood.
But for the large group of homeowners who want their microwave above the stove and their kitchen air to remain reasonably clear, Samsung’s DualVent concept is unusually well targeted. It is a product built around an unglamorous but persistent kitchen annoyance – and that may be exactly why it is one of the company’s more interesting appliance launches this year.
