For a company that has spent decades building some of the fastest, most technically polished supercars on the road, McLaren’s latest idea is refreshingly old-school: give the driver a proper manual gearbox and make the whole experience feel mechanical again.
The McLaren McL 6GT, revealed at Monterey Car Week 2026, is a concept car inspired by the M6GT – the rare late-1960s road car project created by company founder Bruce McLaren. More importantly, it signals a future production McLaren designed around driver involvement rather than just lap times, screens, and paddle shifters. McLaren says a production version is planned for 2028.
The headline feature is the transmission. The McL 6GT uses a manual gearbox sending power to the rear wheels, something McLaren has not offered since the legendary F1 of the 1990s. That is not a minor footnote. In the modern supercar world, where dual-clutch automatics have become almost universal because they shift faster and flatter performance numbers, a manual is a deliberate statement of intent.
McLaren is not pretending this will be the fastest or most efficient way to change gears. That is not the point. The appeal lies in the physical act itself: pressing a clutch pedal, guiding a lever through its gate, matching revs on a downshift, and feeling whether a gear has gone home cleanly. It is a relationship with the car that software cannot quite replicate, even when the software is objectively brilliant.
The company calls the McL 6GT an exercise in “tactility,” and that word explains much of the concept. Alongside the manual gearbox, McLaren has specified hydraulic steering, physical switchgear, machined aluminum controls, and a deliberately engineered gear lever designed for feel as much as function. The shift lever even incorporates a three-dimensional Speedy Kiwi, an emblem tied to McLaren’s early identity.
That approach makes the McL 6GT feel like a response to a growing divide in high-performance cars. Modern supercars are extraordinarily capable, but many have become so optimized that their drivers are often managing modes, screens, paddles, active aero systems, and traction algorithms as much as they are driving. McLaren’s proposition here is different: slow the interaction down just enough that the driver becomes an active part of the process again.
A Bruce McLaren idea, revisited
The name points directly back to the McLaren M6GT, a road-going project born from the company’s Can-Am racing success. The original M6GT was based on the M6A Can-Am racer and reflected Bruce McLaren’s ambition to build a road car with the same directness and purpose as his competition machines. That dream was never fully realized in period, but it became a foundational part of McLaren’s later road-car story.
The McL 6GT is not styled as a retro replica. Instead, it takes the original’s low, wide stance and simple, long-bodied proportions and translates them through modern carbon-fiber construction and contemporary aerodynamic thinking. McLaren describes the design as a clean, uninterrupted form, running from a low nose into a Kammback-style tail, with the cabin visually embedded into the bodywork rather than perched on top of it.
There are heritage details throughout, although they appear to have been handled with more restraint than nostalgia. The rear lighting references the original M6GT’s “Racing Loop” motif, Bruce McLaren’s original M6GT number plate is reinterpreted as a subtle graphic, and his signature appears in the engine bay. Even the fuel filler cap gets a discreet Speedy Kiwi engraving.
That matters because heritage design can go wrong quickly when it becomes costume jewelry. Here, the underlying message is stronger than the visual references: McLaren wants to recover some of the founder’s attitude, not merely borrow his shapes.
Carbon fiber, V8 power, and fewer distractions
McLaren has confirmed that the concept combines V8 internal-combustion power with a full carbon-fiber monocoque and carbon-fiber bodywork. The company has not released power, torque, weight, price, or performance figures, so it would be premature to treat the McL 6GT as a numbers car. Its significance is philosophical before it is statistical.
Still, the construction tells us plenty. McLaren has long built its road-car identity around lightweight carbon-fiber architecture, and the McL 6GT leans into that heritage. Carbon fiber should give the eventual production car the structural stiffness and low mass expected from a modern McLaren, while the manual drivetrain and rear-wheel-drive layout promise a more involving character than the company’s mainstream paddle-shift models.
Inside, McLaren is attempting a similar blend of past and present. The cockpit uses exposed gloss carbon fiber and quilted trim inspired by the original M6GT, but it also incorporates digital instrumentation. That choice is sensible. A manual transmission does not require the cabin to become a museum piece; it simply means the technology should support the driving experience rather than dominate it.
Why the manual matters
A manual supercar in 2026 is not a practical choice. It will almost certainly be slower in a straight line than an equivalent dual-clutch car, less convenient in traffic, and probably more demanding to drive well. Those are exactly the reasons enthusiasts may find it compelling.
The McL 6GT appears to recognize something the high-end car market has increasingly understood: not every buyer wants the most optimized experience. Some want occasion. They want a machine that requires concentration, rewards practice, and feels different at 45 mph as well as 145 mph.
That is especially relevant for McLaren. The brand’s modern range has earned a reputation for light weight, sharp steering, and exceptional chassis balance, but it has generally expressed those qualities through highly advanced automatic drivetrains. A manual McLaren would bring a different kind of intimacy to that formula – one more associated with Porsche’s limited-run GT cars or older analog exotics than with today’s Woking-built supercars.
The company also says the McL 6GT will create space for a “new type of exclusive McLaren supercar” beyond its core portfolio. In plain English, expect this to be rare, expensive, and built for collectors who value an emotional driving experience at least as much as outright performance.
More than a nostalgia play
The easy reading of the McL 6GT is that it is McLaren’s retro concept, a modern car with a stick shift and a few 1960s references. But that undersells what the company is trying to do.
This is really a test of whether a supercar manufacturer can make engagement the luxury product. The McL 6GT is not selling speed alone. It is selling the sensation of moving through gears with your own hand, feeling hydraulic feedback through the wheel, and interacting with hardware that has texture, weight, and consequence.
If McLaren carries that character into the 2028 production car without smoothing away the awkward, mechanical bits that make manuals special, the McL 6GT could become one of the most interesting McLarens in years. Not because it promises to be the quickest, but because it may be the one that asks the most of its driver – and gives the most back in return.
