A year after Ghost of Yōtei arrived, Sucker Punch Productions is bringing players back to Ezo with a Complete Edition that looks less like a routine repackage and more like a substantial second act. Launching for PS5 on October 1, the release bundles the base game with a new narrative expansion, a single-player roguelike combat mode, Ghost of Yōtei Legends multiplayer, and a collection of quality-of-life additions that existing players will receive in a free update.
For anyone who held off on buying the game, the $69.99 Complete Edition is the straightforward entry point. For those already deep into Atsu’s journey, the more interesting question is whether the $14.99 Complete Edition Upgrade, which unlocks the new story and combat content, will be enough of a reason to return. On paper, Sucker Punch has put together a compelling pitch: one expansion that digs into its protagonist’s history and another mode built for players who simply want to test their sword skills until their thumbs give out.
The headline addition is Ghost of Yōtei: Echoes of Sekigahara, a narrative expansion that splits its focus between the present and the past. In the present-day portion, Atsu will investigate an unexplored valley that was once controlled by The Snake and his Vipers. Flashbacks, meanwhile, take players to Atsu’s time on the mainland during the Battle of Sekigahara, a turning point in her life before she returned home and set out on her quest for vengeance.
That structure is promising because Ghost of Yōtei has always had room to explore the history behind Atsu’s anger rather than merely keep it in the background as motivation. The expansion introduces Nagato, someone from her past who has come to Ezo, while also adding enemies, heavy weapons, armor sets, dyes, and more gear to collect. If Sucker Punch can make the flashback material feel emotionally consequential rather than just historical sightseeing, Echoes of Sekigahara could add real weight to the larger story.
Then there is Ghost of Yōtei: Most Wanted, a new single-player combat survival mode that the studio describes as its take on the roguelike format. Players will take on bounties to begin runs, defeat enemies to earn perks, and unlock additional playable characters along the way. It is a format that makes a natural match for a game with a combat system designed around timing, weapon choice, and the satisfying rhythm of a well-executed counterattack.
The mode will not be limited to Atsu, either. The early details point to a small but distinct lineup: Atsu brings dual katanas, Oyuki specializes in the kusarigama, and Nagato fights with a yari. That matters because a good roguelike mode lives or dies on variety. A new weapon or character should not just change an animation set – it should change the decisions players make under pressure, from spacing and crowd control to the kinds of perks that suddenly become worth chasing.
Most Wanted also gives Ghost of Yōtei a cleaner answer to a familiar post-credits problem: what do you do once the story is over and the map is largely cleared? A tightly structured survival mode can keep the combat loop alive without asking players to replay an entire open-world campaign. It is a particularly smart fit for the community that has spent the past year sharing high-skill combat clips, and Sucker Punch is clearly leaning into that audience.
The Complete Edition itself includes the core Ghost of Yōtei campaign, the Echoes of Sekigahara expansion, Most Wanted, and Ghost of Yōtei Legends, the online co-op component that supports up to four players and culminates in a Raid. Online multiplayer requires a PlayStation Plus subscription. The package also rolls in the previously released Digital Deluxe Edition content and the Charm of Hokkyokusei.
There is a small but important wrinkle for buyers. New players can purchase the Complete Edition now and immediately start the base game and Legends, but the expansion and Most Wanted will arrive through the October 1 patch. Existing owners can purchase the $14.99 upgrade for those two headline additions, while the Digital Deluxe content and charm are immediately unlocked for those who do not already have them.
Sucker Punch is also using the release to tidy up a few areas that players routinely care about more than publishers sometimes expect. Every owner of Ghost of Yōtei will receive a free patch on October 1, regardless of whether they buy the upgrade. It includes Beauty of Yōtei, a screensaver-like environment-viewing mode that also doubles as a useful tool for virtual photographers, plus additional music for Watanabe Mode across the game.
More practically, the update will finally let players preserve one armor set’s visual appearance while equipping another set’s stats – effectively a transmog option. A new high-contrast accessibility setting is also on the way, alongside new Photo Mode stamps, additional New Game Plus cosmetics, and new Trophies tied to the expansion and Most Wanted. The transmog-style change may sound minor next to a new story campaign, but it is exactly the kind of addition that makes a long game feel more accommodating on a second run.
Players who purchase the Complete Edition or the upgrade digitally by September 30 will also receive an early unlock for the Sakai Armor on October 1. The armor is a deliberate nod to Jin Sakai’s family set from Ghost of Tsushima, making it an easy piece of fan service for anyone who has followed Sucker Punch’s samurai series from the beginning.
The timing is intentional. The Complete Edition lands around Ghost of Yōtei‘s first anniversary, turning the October update into both a celebration and a bid to extend the game’s life beyond its original release window. The free features give existing players a reason to revisit Ezo, while Echoes of Sekigahara and Most Wanted offer two very different kinds of replay value: one for players invested in Atsu’s past, the other for those who want the clean, demanding pleasure of mastering combat one run at a time.
The patch is scheduled to arrive globally on October 1, though some territories, including parts of Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, will receive it on October 2.
