The next time you are leaving work hungry and trying to figure out dinner, Google Maps may soon do more than show nearby restaurants. Google is adding food-ordering capabilities to Ask Maps, its Gemini-powered conversational Maps experience, allowing users to describe what they want in plain language and move from search to an almost-ready order without jumping between several apps.
Instead of typing a restaurant name, applying filters, browsing menus and then opening a delivery platform, users can make a request such as: “Order spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home.” Ask Maps can look for restaurants that are open along the user’s route, account for dietary needs or saved places, and add the requested dish to a cart after the user picks a restaurant. The customer still reviews the cart and completes the transaction.
It is a small change on paper, but it points to a much bigger shift in how Google wants people to use Maps. The app has long been a place for directions, business listings and reviews. Ask Maps turns it into something closer to a local concierge – one that can understand a messy, real-world request and take action on it.
Google calls these new features “agentic capabilities,” a term that has quickly become one of the tech industry’s favorite ways to describe AI systems that do more than answer questions. In this case, the AI is not simply recommending Thai restaurants. It is intended to handle several steps at once: understand the meal, consider timing and route, identify suitable locations, locate the menu item and prepare the order for checkout.
That distinction matters because ordering food is usually not difficult because people cannot find restaurants. It is difficult because the decision is scattered across too many small tasks. Is the place open? Does it have the exact dish? Is it on the way home? Can it handle a dietary preference? Is pickup more practical than delivery tonight? Google Maps is trying to bring those decisions into one conversation rather than forcing users to manually stitch them together.
For now, the food-ordering experience is rolling out in the United States through partners including Square and Toast, while Uber Eats is listed as coming soon. Google says it is also working with partners on the Universal Commerce Protocol for Food, an effort aimed at making commerce interactions more standardized across services and AI assistants.
The practical appeal is obvious. Restaurant discovery has always been one of Maps’ strongest use cases, but the handoff from discovery to purchase has often been clumsy. A person might spot a well-reviewed restaurant in Maps, tap through to its website, find an ordering link, compare menu options and eventually complete the order somewhere else. Ask Maps is designed to reduce that friction, keeping the task rooted in context: where the user is, where they are going and what they actually feel like eating.
There is also a useful difference between this and the generic “near me” search. Ask Maps can interpret more conversational constraints. Someone might want vegetarian food that is open late, affordable enough for a weeknight and available near a train station. Another person may need a quick pickup order that fits between an office and home. These are the kinds of queries people naturally ask friends, but conventional search interfaces have not always handled gracefully.
Google’s approach depends heavily on the information it already holds inside Maps: business hours, location data, restaurant menus, reviews, popular times, routes and user-saved places. Add Gemini’s ability to process natural-language requests, and Maps starts to look less like a directory and more like an action layer for the physical world.
Of course, this kind of convenience will only be as good as the underlying information. Restaurant hours change, menus go out of date, dishes sell out and pickup timing can be unpredictable. Google says its Maps ecosystem draws on contributions from more than 500 million contributors, and it is also expanding conversational ways for users to report updates, including the ability to upload a photo of a storefront sign so Maps can identify changed hours before the user confirms the edit. Suggested changes are reviewed through Google’s protection systems before they are published.
Food ordering is only one part of the broader Ask Maps update. Google is also introducing real-time transit information inside the feature, so users can ask about options for buses, trains, subways and ferries and see current departure information, including minute-by-minute delay adjustments.
The company is also expanding what it calls Personal Intelligence. Users can optionally connect Ask Maps to Gmail, with Calendar support planned for later, allowing Maps to use information such as hotel bookings, flight details or dinner reservations when offering suggestions. Google says the Gmail connection is off by default and users decide whether to enable it.
That feature is likely to be both useful and closely watched. A Maps assistant that knows you have a flight tomorrow morning could offer genuinely better recommendations near your hotel. But it also reinforces the broader tradeoff at the center of AI assistants: the more context they can access, the more helpful they can become, and the more important clear consent and privacy controls become.
For users, the immediate story is simpler. Ask Maps is trying to turn the “What should I eat?” moment into a faster, less annoying task. Rather than opening Maps, checking hours, searching menus and bouncing between services, Google wants people to describe the outcome they want and let the app take care of the tedious bits.
That may be where conversational AI proves most valuable: not in flashy demos, but in shaving a few steps off everyday decisions people make when they are tired, busy and hungry. Google Maps has always helped people get somewhere. With Ask Maps, it increasingly wants to help them get things done before they arrive.
