Walmart has completed its acquisition of Vibe.co, bringing a self-service streaming TV advertising platform into Walmart Connect at a moment when retail media is becoming much more than sponsored product listings. The deal gives Walmart a more direct route to help brands buy, target and measure ads on connected TV – while tying those campaigns closer to actual shopping behavior.

The company announced the close on August 4, roughly six weeks after first revealing its plan to acquire Vibe.co. Walmart has not officially disclosed the transaction’s price, though earlier reporting put the deal at about $1.4 billion.

For shoppers, this is the kind of deal that mostly happens behind the screen. For advertisers, however, it signals that Walmart wants to make streaming television a much more practical, measurable extension of its fast-growing media business.

Vibe.co was founded in 2021 with a straightforward pitch: make buying TV ads feel less like navigating the traditional TV industry and more like running a campaign on Google or Meta. Its self-service platform lets advertisers launch connected TV campaigns across premium streaming publishers, set flexible budgets and manage performance without the usual agency-heavy process associated with television advertising. The company says it serves more than 10,000 advertisers.

That matters because connected TV has long carried a contradiction. Streaming ads can reach highly engaged audiences on big screens, but the buying process has often remained too complicated, expensive or opaque for smaller companies. Vibe’s product was built around reducing that friction, positioning streaming TV as an accessible performance-marketing channel rather than a branding privilege reserved for large national advertisers.

Walmart now wants to pair that simplicity with something few advertising platforms can match at scale: commerce data. Walmart Connect already enables brands, Marketplace sellers and suppliers to advertise across Walmart’s website, app and physical stores. With Vibe, the retailer can add another prominent touchpoint near the top of the purchase journey – the TV in a consumer’s living room – and potentially connect exposure there with shopping outcomes later.

In plain terms, an advertiser could eventually use Walmart’s audience and shopping signals to inform a streaming campaign, then assess whether that campaign helped drive a product search, online order or store purchase. That closed-loop measurement is central to the appeal of retail media. Brands are no longer being asked merely to trust that an ad generated awareness; they increasingly expect evidence that it moved products.

Ryan Mayward, general manager and senior vice president of Walmart Connect U.S., said Vibe had made streaming TV advertising “simple and accessible” for businesses of different sizes. Walmart’s aim, he said, is to build on that foundation by making campaigns more measurable and more effective across streaming, shopping and the broader commerce journey.

The acquisition also fits into a larger Walmart strategy that has been coming into clearer focus. Retailers are using their first-party customer relationships, their shopping data and their digital real estate to build advertising businesses that can deliver attractive margins alongside their core retail operations. Walmart Connect is competing in a market where Amazon has established a formidable advertising operation, while Target, Instacart, Kroger and others are building their own versions of the retail-media playbook.

For Walmart, television is especially important because it broadens the proposition beyond its own properties. A sponsored listing on Walmart.com catches a shopper near a buying decision. A streaming TV ad can introduce a brand earlier, when the viewer may not yet be actively shopping. Put the two together, and Walmart can offer advertisers a fuller funnel: awareness on streaming TV, consideration on digital channels and conversion through Walmart’s ecommerce and store network.

The Vibe deal also follows Walmart’s 2024 acquisition of smart TV maker Vizio, a $2.3 billion transaction that gave the retailer a foothold in connected TV hardware and operating-system advertising. Vizio and Vibe solve different pieces of the same puzzle. Vizio brings television distribution and viewing surfaces; Vibe brings a self-serve buying platform designed to make streaming inventory easier for performance-focused advertisers to use.

That combination could give Walmart more leverage across the connected-TV advertising stack. It can potentially offer marketers an easier buying interface, shopper-informed targeting, retail attribution and access to TV inventory – all without forcing advertisers to treat TV as a separate, hard-to-measure media channel.

Arthur Querou, Vibe.co’s co-founder and CEO, said the company was founded to make TV advertising as intuitive as search and social advertising. Joining Walmart, he said, gives Vibe the scale, first-party insights and commerce capabilities to pursue that goal with a broader set of advertisers.

There are still practical questions about what integration will look like. Walmart has said Vibe will help it develop new ways for advertisers to plan, buy and measure streaming TV advertising, but it has not yet detailed product timelines, changes to Vibe’s existing platform or how deeply Walmart’s data will be embedded in the service.

For now, the bigger message is clear: Walmart does not see advertising as a side business attached to retail. It sees it as a core technology and growth engine – one that can turn its relationships with shoppers into a more complete media offering.

The completed Vibe.co purchase moves Walmart one step closer to that vision. Streaming TV ads may still look like ordinary commercials to viewers, but behind the scenes, Walmart is working to make them behave more like digital commerce: targeted, flexible, measurable and directly connected to what people buy.
