DJI has unveiled the Osmo Pocket 4P, a 230g pocket gimbal camera that brings a dual-lens setup, a 1-inch sensor, a 60mm portrait lens, and unusually ambitious video specs to a device small enough to disappear into a jacket pocket. It is the clearest sign yet that DJI sees pocket cameras not merely as vlogging accessories, but as legitimate tools for creators who want more cinematic control without carrying a camera bag.
There is a familiar moment for anyone who shoots video regularly: the scene is happening now, the light is good for perhaps two more minutes, and the proper camera is sitting at home because it was too much trouble to bring along. Smartphones have made that problem less painful, of course, but they still have limits. Digital zoom often falls apart, stabilization can look artificial, and getting a natural-looking portrait shot without a stack of accessories remains harder than it should be.
The Osmo Pocket line has always been DJI’s answer to that gap. Since the original Osmo gimbal camera arrived in 2015 and the first Osmo Pocket followed in 2018, the idea has been fairly simple: put a mechanically stabilized camera on a tiny handle and make it quick enough to use before the moment passes. With the Pocket 4P, DJI is taking that idea in a more professional direction.
The headline feature is a two-lens camera system. Its main wide-angle camera uses a new 1-inch CMOS sensor with a 20mm-equivalent focal length and an f/2.0 aperture. Alongside it sits a 60mm medium-telephoto lens with an f/1.8 aperture, giving creators a more useful option for portraits, product close-ups, travel details, and shots where a wide lens can make subjects look too distant or distorted. DJI says the telephoto camera provides 3x optical zoom and up to 12x zoom in supported modes.
That second lens matters more than it may initially sound. Most pocket-sized cameras are built around a wide field of view because it is easier to stabilize and more forgiving when filming yourself at arm’s length. But wide angles are not always flattering, especially for faces. A 60mm perspective gives images a more natural sense of depth and lets the background visually compress behind a subject, which is a big part of the look people associate with dedicated portrait lenses and more polished video work.
DJI is also making a major claim on image quality. The company says the Pocket 4P’s main sensor can deliver up to 17 stops of dynamic range using LOFIC technology, a figure generally associated with much larger and higher-end cameras. In plain English, dynamic range is about how well a camera can preserve detail at the brightest and darkest ends of a scene at the same time. It is the difference between keeping detail in a bright window while still seeing a person’s face indoors, or filming a sunset without turning the foreground into a shapeless silhouette.
As always, these claims need to be viewed in the context of real-world testing, shooting modes, and DJI’s own controlled measurements. Still, the direction is notable. Small cameras often struggle most when the lighting gets complicated – a city street at night, a person standing in front of a window, or a scene that moves quickly between sunlight and shade. If the Pocket 4P can retain noticeably more highlight and shadow information than its predecessors, it could be a meaningful upgrade for travel filmmakers and solo creators who cannot stop to light every shot.
The new camera can record 4K video at up to 240 frames per second in supported modes, enabling 8x ultra-HD slow motion. That is an aggressive specification for something this small, and it opens the door to the kinds of shots that typically make a short travel reel or product video feel more intentional: water splashing, a skateboard jump, fabric moving in the wind, or a quick action beat that benefits from a little extra drama. DJI has also added a Slow Shutter Video mode intended to create light trails and motion-blur effects directly in camera.
For creators who color-grade footage, perhaps the more important development is the addition of DJI’s 10-bit D-Log 2 profile. DJI says the profile records more than one billion colors, which should provide smoother gradients and more room to adjust exposure and color in post-production than conventional 8-bit footage. That does not automatically make every clip look cinematic – grading still takes time, skill, and a good monitor – but it gives serious users more latitude when they are matching Pocket footage with material from a mirrorless camera, drone, or other DJI gear.
The camera’s core stabilizing hardware remains central to the experience. Rather than relying solely on software stabilization, the Pocket 4P uses a three-axis mechanical gimbal. Mechanical stabilization has long been one of the Osmo Pocket family’s biggest advantages: it can smooth handheld movement while preserving a more natural image, without the heavy crop or warping that digital stabilization can sometimes introduce.
DJI has paired that hardware with ActiveTrack 8.0, its latest subject-tracking system. The company says it can recognize people, vehicles, pets, and dynamically shaped objects, and keep a chosen subject framed even when using up to 12x zoom. It also offers automatic framing for multiple subjects. For someone filming a walking interview, a family trip, a cooking demonstration, or a fast-moving pet, that sounds less like a flashy feature and more like a practical way to avoid coming home with a batch of nearly usable clips.
The Pocket 4P also appears designed around a recurring pain point for small-camera users: friction. DJI says rotating the touchscreen can power on the camera and begin recording, while gesture controls can activate subject tracking with an open palm or begin recording with a V sign. It can capture 37-megapixel still images, and its 4K Live Photo feature records a 1.5-second video clip with each photo.
Those features will not matter equally to everyone, but they underline the product’s real appeal. A camera that requires menus, a setup routine, and an accessory hunt tends to stay in a bag. A camera that can be turned on, pointed, and trusted to hold a subject steady has a much better chance of becoming part of a daily shooting habit.
Workflow is another area where DJI is trying to make the Pocket 4P feel less like a compromise. It supports wired transfer speeds of up to 800MB/s through USB 3.1, according to the company, which could be genuinely useful when shifting high-bitrate 4K footage to a laptop or phone. DJI also claims the device can charge from zero to 80 percent in 18 minutes and run for up to 210 minutes when fully charged, though battery performance will naturally vary with settings, recording resolution, ambient temperature, and whether the gimbal and tracking features are working hard.
There is an expanding accessory ecosystem, too. DJI lists a fill light, black mist filter, ND filter set, wide-angle lens, battery handle, tripod, and support for OsmoAudio microphones among the available add-ons. The accessories are sold separately or included in select bundles, so buyers should look closely at what comes in the version they choose rather than assuming the base camera is ready for every kind of shoot.
The bigger story is that DJI is increasingly narrowing the divide between convenience cameras and serious production tools. The Pocket 4P is not likely to replace a full-frame camera for controlled commercial work, nor is it trying to. A larger system still offers more lens choices, better ergonomics, stronger low-light flexibility, and room for professional audio and lighting setups. But for the growing number of creators working alone, publishing quickly, and moving between everyday life and production work, the more relevant question is not whether a pocket camera can replace every camera. It is whether it can be good enough that you actually bring it.
With its dual focal lengths, mechanical gimbal, 1-inch main sensor, 4K/240fps capability, and D-Log 2 workflow, the Osmo Pocket 4P looks built around that exact proposition. DJI is betting that a camera can be small, immediate, and approachable without feeling disposable – and that creators increasingly want their most capable camera to be the one they can keep within reach.
