For years, OLED displays have been the gold standard for deep blacks, near-infinite contrast, and vibrant colors. If there has been one lingering criticism, though, it’s that OLED panels can struggle to match the brightest LCD displays in certain HDR scenes or brightly lit environments. Samsung Display now believes it’s taken a significant step toward closing that gap.
The company has officially begun supplying its latest tandem OLED laptop panels that meet the brand-new VESA DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification, raising the bar for what premium OLED laptops can deliver. It’s more than just another numbers game. Higher brightness has long been one of the final frontiers for OLED technology, and this latest development suggests the industry is entering a new phase where users may no longer have to choose between perfect blacks and eye-catching HDR highlights.
At the center of the announcement is VESA’s newly introduced DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. Until recently, True Black 1000 represented the highest level available for OLED displays. The new 1400 tier increases peak brightness requirements by roughly 40%, giving manufacturers a much tougher target while preserving OLED’s signature ability to produce true blacks and exceptional contrast.
Samsung Display says its latest laptop OLED panel can reach peak brightness levels of up to 1,600 nits under HDR conditions, comfortably exceeding the new certification threshold. That doesn’t mean the screen constantly operates at those brightness levels. Like other HDR displays, these peaks are reserved for small highlights such as sunlight reflections, explosions in games, or bright stars against a dark night sky. Those brief moments are exactly where HDR content is designed to shine, both literally and visually.
The biggest reason Samsung has been able to push brightness this far is its tandem OLED architecture.
Unlike conventional OLED panels that rely on a single light-emitting layer, tandem OLED stacks multiple organic emitting layers together. This allows the display to generate more light while reducing stress on each individual layer. The result isn’t simply higher brightness. Samsung also says the approach improves power efficiency and extends panel lifespan, two areas that become increasingly important as manufacturers continue pushing OLED technology harder every year. Newly developed organic materials also contribute to the performance improvements.
For laptop users, this could translate into a noticeably better everyday experience.
One of the common complaints with earlier OLED laptops was outdoor visibility. While many looked stunning indoors, bright office lighting or sunlight could wash out portions of the screen. Extra brightness gives displays more headroom to maintain vivid HDR effects while also making regular content easier to see in brighter environments.
Creative professionals may benefit as well. HDR video editors, photographers, and designers increasingly rely on laptops capable of accurately reproducing high dynamic range content. A display that combines true OLED blacks with substantially brighter highlights allows creators to preview HDR footage more faithfully without needing an external reference monitor.
Gaming also stands to gain. Modern games are designed around HDR lighting effects, from glowing neon signs in futuristic cities to sunlight piercing through forests. Higher peak brightness makes those visual moments feel more realistic while OLED’s near-instant pixel response continues to provide the smooth motion and low input lag gamers already appreciate.
Samsung Display isn’t introducing this technology in isolation. The company’s first certified panel has already appeared in Lenovo‘s Yoga Pro 9i Aura Edition (16-inch, Gen 11), which recently received official DisplayHDR True Black 1400 certification. Samsung says additional products from ASUS, Dell Technologies, and MSI are expected to arrive beginning later this year and continuing into next year, suggesting adoption could expand fairly quickly across the premium Windows laptop market.
Timing also works in Samsung Display’s favor.
The premium laptop segment has become increasingly competitive as manufacturers search for meaningful hardware upgrades beyond faster processors. Display quality has emerged as one of the easiest ways to differentiate flagship devices. Whether it’s AI-powered laptops, creator-focused workstations, or high-end gaming machines, nearly every premium notebook now emphasizes screen quality as a major selling point.
At the same time, competitors aren’t standing still. Display makers across the industry continue improving OLED efficiency, reducing reflections, increasing refresh rates, and developing technologies aimed at improving eye comfort. The race has gradually shifted from simply offering OLED to delivering better OLED. Samsung’s latest panel is a clear example of that trend.
Samsung Display plans to showcase the new True Black 1400 tandem OLED technology publicly during K-Display 2026, where visitors will get a closer look at what these brighter HDR panels can achieve in real-world demonstrations.
For consumers, the biggest takeaway isn’t necessarily the certification name or the 1,600-nit figure. It’s what those numbers represent. OLED has already established itself as one of the best display technologies available thanks to its perfect blacks, outstanding contrast, and rich colors. Brightness has remained one of the few areas where LCD technology could still claim an advantage.
With True Black 1400, Samsung Display is making a strong case that OLED’s next chapter isn’t just about preserving what made it great in the first place. It’s about eliminating one of its last meaningful compromises. As these panels begin appearing in premium laptops over the coming months, buyers may finally get a display that delivers the deep cinematic blacks OLED is famous for without sacrificing the brilliant HDR highlights modern content increasingly demands.
