If you open the Gemini app today and ask it to “turn my family into claymation characters,” it no longer shrugs and gives you a generic stock family. Instead, it can actually use your own photos to build that scene – your face, your kids, your dog, your living room vibe – all without you manually digging up and uploading files every time.
At the heart of this change is Personal Intelligence, Google’s umbrella term for letting Gemini tap into your Google apps – Gmail, Photos, YouTube, Search and more – so it actually knows something about your life instead of acting like a blank-slate chatbot. The newest twist is that this Personal Intelligence layer now plugs directly into Nano Banana 2, Google’s latest image generation model inside Gemini, and it can ground your prompts in your Google Photos library to spit out images that look like they were made just for you.
In practice, that changes how you prompt. Previously, if you wanted something that felt truly personal, you had to upload a reference photo, describe everyone in it, spell out the scene, style, and context, and hope the model understood. Now, Gemini can infer a lot of that from what it already knows: your aesthetic, the people you tag in Photos, the kinds of images and activities that show up again and again in your library. So prompts can stay short and almost casual: “Design my dream house,” “Create a picture of my desert island essentials,” or “Make a watercolor of me and my friends at our favorite bar.”
The Photos piece is where it really becomes intimate. When you connect your Google Photos library to Personal Intelligence, Gemini doesn’t just know that you like hiking or that you have a toddler; it can literally use images of you, your family, and your pets as the reference point for generation. If you’ve been that person who obsessively organizes albums and applies face labels, that groundwork suddenly pays off: those labels (“Mom,” “Alex,” “Rocky the dog”) become the hooks Gemini uses to pull the right people into the scene. Ask it to “create a claymation image of me and my family enjoying our favorite activity,” and Nano Banana 2 will reach into your Photos, pick a relevant shot of your usual weekend ritual, and remix that into a stylized illustration that still feels recognizably you.
One subtle but important part of this is how much of the friction disappears from the creative process. Instead of the traditional AI art workflow – hunt for a photo, upload it, explain the pose, describe everyone’s hair style, define the background, refine with multiple prompts – you just type a natural sentence and let Gemini handle the context plumbing behind the scenes. That makes the feature feel less like using a design tool and more like talking to a friend who already knows what your living room looks like and what your partner’s style is.
Google also knows that handing an AI direct access to your personal photos sounds like a giant red flag, especially in 2026, when everyone is already tuned into data collection. So a big chunk of the pitch here is “creative, but with guardrails.” First, Personal Intelligence is explicitly opt-in: by default, Gemini doesn’t have any special pipeline into your Photos or other apps, and you choose what to connect and can disconnect it at any time in settings. Second, Google is repeating a line you’re going to see a lot: the Gemini app does not directly train its models on your private Google Photos library, nor on your private Gmail inbox, and Photos data is not used to train generative models outside of the Photos environment. Instead, the company says it trains on “limited information,” like the prompts you type into Gemini and the model’s responses, after they’ve been filtered for personal data.
Still, “trust me” only goes so far with AI. To give people more control, Google is shipping some transparency tooling along with the magic. Anytime Gemini auto-selects a reference image from your library, you can tap the Sources button to see which photo it used to guide the creation, and if you don’t like that choice, you can hit a plus icon and pick a different shot. If the output feels off – wrong location, wrong person, wrong outfit – you can just tell Gemini what it got wrong and have it regenerate, or swap in another reference image for a new angle. In other words, it’s not a fire-and-forget system; it’s more like an AI art assistant you can nudge and correct as you go.
It’s also very clearly an early, premium-era feature. For now, this personalized image creation is rolling out over the next few days to paying Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers in the United States, with plans to expand to Gemini in Chrome on desktop and more regions later. That tracks with Google’s broader playbook around Gemini: ship the splashiest features to subscribers and power users first, use that feedback loop to smooth the rough edges, then push them into the mainstream once the tech – and the trust model – feels solid.
Zooming out, this update is a pretty clean example of where Google wants Gemini to go: away from generic, “everyone gets the same answer” AI, toward a system that can reason across your private data, understand your history, and then synthesize something new that only makes sense for you. On the text side, Personal Intelligence can already do this for things like “What are my upcoming travel plans?” or “How many times did I work out last month?” by looking at email, photos, and other signals. Now, the same philosophy is invading the visual side: your AI doesn’t just create “a fantasy landscape,” it creates your fantasy landscape, populated with the people, pets, and objects you care about, in styles you’re likely to actually enjoy.
Of course, that raises some messy cultural questions: how comfortable are people with their chatbots knowing what they look like, who they live with, and what their kids do on weekends – and then turning that into infinitely remixable art? Privacy policies and opt-in toggles are one part of the answer, but there’s also a deeper shift happening in how we think about personal data: from something companies analyze for ads to raw creative material you can use to build with AI. Whether users embrace this or keep Personal Intelligence switched off will say a lot about how ready people are to let their AI assistants stop being abstract tools and start becoming mirrors of their lives.
