Apple Inc. invented iOS (previously iPhone OS), a mobile operating system designed specifically for its hardware. It is the operating system that runs on many of Apple's mobile devices, notably the iPhone and iPod Touch; until the moniker iPadOS was adopted with version 13 in 2019, the word also referred to versions running on iPads.

iOS was released in 2007 for the first-generation iPhone, but it has subsequently been expanded to include compatibility for additional Apple devices such as the iPod Touch (September 2007) and the iPad (introduced: January 2010; availability: April 2010.)

The system serves as the foundation for Apple's iPadOS, tvOS, and watchOS operating systems. Although some sections of it are open source under the Apple Public Source License and other licenses, it is proprietary software.

The Plan

When Steve Jobs started working on the iPhone in 2005, he had the opportunity of "shrinking the Mac, which would be an amazing result of engineering, or enlarging the iPod." Jobs preferred the earlier strategy, but put the Macintosh and iPod teams, led by Scott Forstall and Tony Fadell, against one other in an internal competition, with Forstall finishing successfully by inventing the iPhone operating system.

This approach helped the iPhone's success as a platform for third-party developers: the iPhone's use of a well-known desktop operating system as its foundation allowed many third-party Mac developers to produce iPhone apps with minimum retraining. Forstall was also in charge of developing a software development kit for programmers to use in producing iPhone apps, as well as an iTunes App Store.

On January 9, 2007, the operating system was launched alongside the iPhone at the Macworld Conference & Expo, and it was released in June of that year. Steve Jobs said at the time of the iPhone's debut in January that "iPhone runs OS X" and "desktop-class applications," however the operating system was rebranded "iPhone OS" at the time of the iPhone's release.

Third-party native applications were not initially supported. Jobs reasoned that developers might create web applications that "would behave like native apps on the iPhone" using the Safari web browser.

Apple announced in October 2007 that a native Software Development Kit (SDK) was in the works and that it will be "in developers' hands in February." Apple conducted a press event on March 6, 2008, to announce the iPhone SDK.
