Apple and OpenAI have struck a unique deal that goes beyond just integrating cutting-edge AI into upcoming Apple devices. As part of the agreement that brings ChatGPT to iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia, Apple’s senior leadership is gaining a foothold within OpenAI itself. According to Bloomberg, Phil Schiller, the tech giant’s App Store chief and a well-respected figure within Apple, will be appointed as an observer on the OpenAI board.

While it might not sound like much, the observer role grants Schiller a valuable window into the inner workings of OpenAI. He’ll be able to attend board meetings, participate in discussions, and gain insights into the company’s direction and future plans. However, it’s important to note that this is not a voting position. Schiller won’t have any say in OpenAI’s decisions, but his presence allows Apple to stay informed about the AI powerhouse that’s now powering parts of its own software.

This move puts Apple on equal footing with Microsoft, another tech giant with a keen interest in AI. Microsoft has also secured an observer role on the OpenAI board, suggesting a growing trend of collaboration within the AI landscape. However, some potential bumps in the road exist. With Microsoft heavily invested in OpenAI (to the tune of $13 billion!), future board meetings could involve discussions about ventures specific to the Microsoft-OpenAI partnership. In such cases, it’s possible that Schiller might be excluded to avoid any conflicts of interest.

The financial details surrounding the Apple-OpenAI deal are also interesting. There’s no exchange of money happening at this point. Apple isn’t paying OpenAI to use ChatGPT, and OpenAI isn’t shelling out for integration into Apple’s devices. This suggests a more strategic partnership, where both companies aim to benefit from the integration. Apple gets a significant AI boost for Siri, potentially making it more competitive with other digital assistants, while OpenAI gains access to a massive user base through Apple devices.

While the exact details of how Siri will utilize ChatGPT remain to be seen, the integration is expected to allow Siri to handle more complex user requests with explicit user permission. This could be a significant leap forward for Apple’s virtual assistant, potentially narrowing the gap with rivals like Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa.

The appointment of Phil Schiller as an observer on the OpenAI board signifies a deeper collaboration between the two tech giants. While the financial details remain under wraps, the strategic benefits seem clear. Apple gains a powerful AI tool for Siri, and OpenAI gets access to a massive user base. With both companies keeping a close eye on each other through their board observer roles, this partnership has the potential to significantly impact the future of AI development.
